I want to tell you why BrikFi exists.
I grew up in Alexandria, Virginia, in public housing, directly across the street from million-dollar townhomes and a Metro station. My senior year of high school, I stepped off the school bus one afternoon and just stood there, looking at my side of the street, and then at my neighbors’ side. We went to the same schools. We shopped at the same stores. Often we even worked the same jobs. And still, our lives were completely different. I couldn’t explain it, and it bothered me for years.
Later I became a banker, and I worked through the 2008 housing crisis. I watched that one year ruin some families and quietly make others. That’s when I could finally put a name to what I’d seen from the school bus: the difference between the two sides of my street was never effort. It was what each side got to keep. My neighbors across the street had a mortgage, also known as a built-in savings account that grew a little with every payment they made. We paid just as faithfully, every single month. We kept nothing.
Here’s what I’ve come to believe. Neighborhoods like mine don’t lack spending, they lack a built-in way for the people who rent to keep some of what they spend. Every dollar that leaves for a national chain, or ships in from somewhere far away, is a dollar that never pays a neighbor, stocks a local shelf, or funds the block. I don’t hate national chains. We all shop at them, and that’s fine. We just need balance.
BrikFi starts with the piece of this I can hand you today: real cash rewards for shopping at the local businesses that keep your money working where you live.
Thank you for being here at the beginning.

It's blocked in the database itself, not just by policy. A business sees how many: how many regulars came back, how many went quiet. Never who, and never a count small enough to point at anyone.
